Action needed on wild dogs

WAFarmers representatives will meet with WA Minister for Agriculture and Food Ken Baston today as part of a continual effort to secure industry-wide support for the National Wild Dog Action Plan.

WAFarmers representatives will join peak wool industry body WoolProducers Australia to discuss the plan with Minister Baston and seek his support for its objectives and implementation.

WAFarmers Wool Section President Ed Rogister said it was important to have the support of government to ensure the plan’s success.

“We have written to Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce seeking his support and call on him to make a solid commitment to action against the devastating impact of wild dogs,” Mr Rogister said.

“It was great to hear Prime Minister Tony Abbott this week recognise the critical impact wild dogs have on the primary production sector, which is reported to have cost producers in WA’s rangelands more than $6 million in 2012.”

While wool industry body Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) had carried out research and provided funding for wild dog management groups, industry-wide support was required to ensure the Wild Dog Action Plan’s success.

“We hope AWI will see merit in the plan and industry’s desire to see it succeed and change its position to support the initiative in due course,” Mr Rogister said.

“WAFarmers will continue to drive for industry-wide support for this plan.”

Ends.
