Ag Minister’s support of DAFWA critical for industry

WAFarmers has applauded the State Minister for Agriculture in supporting the role and functions of the Department of Agriculture and Food WA (DAFWA) and for championing the department’s critical advocacy role.

WAFarmers Chief Executive Officer Stephen Brown said Minister Dean Nalder had worked towards redefining and redeveloping the department in the six weeks since his appointment as Minister for Agriculture.

“Since his appointment in March, Minister Nalder has demonstrated strong ongoing support for the development and growth of DAFWA and its future functions,” Mr Brown said.

“It has been a difficult time at DAFWA of late, with recent significant budget cuts and staff freezes, however WAFarmers believes the implementation of a strategic review under the guidance of Minister Nalder will pave the way for a larger leading role for the department.”

Mr Brown affirmed the sentiments of DAFWA’s Acting Director General Mark Webb, stating that the department is a “good investment”.

“WAFarmers has continually advocated for government to understand DAFWA’s critical importance to the continued success of the Western Australian agricultural industry, and we are pleased to see these concerns taken seriously,” Mr Brown said.

“While there is some way to go in clearly defining the role of the government in supporting the agricultural and farming sector, we believe continued collaboration between Minister Nalder, DAFWA and other key stakeholders will result in the department being stronger than ever before.

“We look forward to seeing how Minister Nalder plans to implement the necessary funding required to properly support the industry and the reinvigorated direction of DAFWA following the completion of the strategic review.”
