APVMA dimethoate decision applauded

WAFarmers has welcomed the recent decision by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) to allow growers continued access to dimethoate for early season application only.

The regulatory decision on the reconsideration of the active constituent omethoate was part of a review of a number of actives by APVMA.

Following consultation with Grain Producers Australia, WAFarmers sent a submission to the APVMA on the proposed regulatory decision on 27 January, which was referenced on page eight of the Dimethoate—proposed regulatory decisions report, released late last month.

In our submission, WAFarmers supported and endorsed the comments provided by Grain Producers Australia, and requested a phase out period for late season applications, to allow for new registrations of alternative pesticides.

WAFarmers also requested that APVMA work with industry to ensure that all adequate information is available to guarantee that a chemical can be effectively assessed.

WAFarmers is pleased that growers have continued access to dimethoate for early season application only, and looks forward to further consultation regarding cessation of late season application of the pesticide.
