Beekeepers have their say on Senate inquiry

WAFarmers beekeepers section has made a submission to the Senate Inquiry into the Future of Beekeeping and Pollination Industries in Australia.

The submission covered areas of food security, environment and financial aspects of the beekeeping industry in Western Australia.  Current challenges facing the industry both domestically and internationally were outlined as well as matters which may impact its future sustainability.  Areas of biosecurity, truth in labelling and research and development also received attention.

There have been a number of inquiries into the bee industry, the most comprehensive one done in 2008 entitled “More than Honey – the future of the Australian honey bee and pollination industries”.  What is disappointing is that the Federal Government of the time, after making a number of recommendations walked away and left the industry to fend for itself.  It is for this reason that we are pleased that the current Senate inquiry was also seeking comment on the progress of the previous recommendations it made some six years ago
