Forum to discuss investment in natural resources in WA, Sept 11 (DAFWA)

Industry representatives, research organisations, consultants, community members and government agencies are invited to a forum to hear about decision-making approaches to be considered for investing in the future of natural resource use in WA agriculture.

The Department of Agriculture and Food is hosting the Laying the groundwork for investment in the sustainable use of natural resources in agriculture forum in Perth next month.

Department Agriculture Resource Risk Management executive director John Ruprecht said by investing to improve the natural resource base, we would contribute to improving the long term profitability and productivity of agriculture in WA.

“The benefit of investing in managing the natural resources used by agriculture takes time to be realised, sometimes up to 20 years. This is why it is important to make timely investment decisions,” Mr Ruprecht said.

“Last year the department produced a report card on sustainable natural resource use in agriculture which identified issues affecting broadacre agriculture, including soil compaction, water repellent and acidic soils, salinity and wind and water erosion.

“The department has produced a companion report to the Report Card, Investing in sustainable resource use, which provides information on management responses for each theme. The findings of this report will be presented at the forum.

”The Laying the groundwork for investment in the sustainable use of natural resources in agriculture forum is will be held on 11 September at Burswood on the Swan from 8.30am to 2pm. Registration is open now, closing on 3 September.

Guest speakers will be the department’s Anne Bennett, David Pannell from the University of Western Australia, Rick Llewellyn from CSIRO and Danielle England from AgInnovate.

The speakers will discuss a number of issues, including the evaluation and adoption of sustainable agriculture practices and decision-making approaches to be considered for investing in the future of natural resource use in agriculture.
