Fuel rebate cut a no go

WAFarmers is cautioning the Federal government against making cuts to the current off-road fuel rebate farmers can claim through the Fuel Tax Credit Scheme.

Should speculation of such cuts be true, the Federal government would be defying its commitment to industry’s profitability and competitiveness, WAFarmers President Dale Park said.

“Prior to last year’s election, WAFarmers called for the off-road fuel rebate to be retained in the interests of keeping farming businesses viable in the face of rising cost pressures,” Mr Park said.

“If agriculture is one of the five pillars of the Australian economy, as the Coalition claims, and they are committed to the future competitiveness of industry, then this is definitely not the way to demonstrate that.

“Cutting the rebate could cost producers thousands of dollars per year, compounding other cost pressures which continue to rise.”

WAFarmers is joining with the National Farmers’ Federation and other State Farming Organisations in voicing its concerns about the potential cut, and will be speaking with politicians demanding they take any such cuts off the table.

“I also urge all farmers out there to get on the phone or write an email to their Federal member of parliament and have their voice heard, in the best interests of industry,” Mr Park said.

The current Fuel Tax Credit Scheme allows farmers to get a rebate of duties paid on certain fuels purchased for off-road purposes, while the collected duties are used to maintain the nation’s road network.
