Growers set agenda for Katanning field day – DAFWA

Growers and agronomists will have the chance to discuss current seasonal issues at the Department of Agriculture and Food’s Katanning Research Facility field day next month.

Department Katanning manager Keith Ohlsen said the program for the field day was developed after consultation with growers, consultants and agribusiness contacts to identify priority issues within the region.

“Issues that will be highlighted include canola disease and red-legged earth mite control,” Mr Ohlsen said.

“There will also be a focus on technology and mobile device applications (apps) including a MyCrop demonstration and a new app in development, MyPest Guide, aimed at identifying pests and biosecurity threats in canola crops.”

Mr Ohlsen said the field day would open with a breakfast and official welcome at the main truck shed at the Katanning Research Facility on Nyabing Road.  This would be followed by two bus tours to view trial sites.

“The sites include blackleg and sclerotinia damage in canola crops, red-legged earth mite resistance, protein management in barley, herbicide tolerance of wheat, barley and oat varieties, and pasture development,” Mr Ohlsen said.

“Department staff will be on hand to discuss these and any other issues that arise on the day.”

The field day is supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation and is being held on Thursday 9 October from 7.30am to 12.30pm.

The event is free, however, attendees are asked to register by contacting the department’s Katanning office on +61 (0)8 9821 3333.
