Honey Month is fast approaching

The fourth annual Honey Month is fast approaching and will be celebrated across the country, promoting Australian honeybees and their products to the wider public.

Honey Month committee member Leilani Leyland, who is also the vice president of the WAFarmers Beekeepers Section, said a small scale festival proved to be extremely successful by attracting far more visitors than originally anticipated.

“The general public was excited to learn about beekeeping and honey,” Mrs Leyland said.

“The number of beekeepers is declining as a result of a retiring workforce so developing the younger generation’s interest in beekeeping is a driving force behind Honey Month, as is educating the public so they can support West Australian honey and the beekeepers that produce it.”

The WA Honey Festival will again be hosted at the House of Honey at Herne Hill on 3 May, from 10am to 4pm, as part of the Honey Month celebrations.

The festival will feature beekeeping talks, activities for children, hive loading demonstrations, a honey judging competition and a performance of the Honey Bee Dance by Aboriginal dance group Wadumbah.

“Our goal is for the festival to become an integral part of the Swan Valley’s tourism calendar, depicting the Western Australian honey industry as one of the finest in the world,” Mrs Leyland said.

Honey Month is proudly sponsored by The House of Honey, Capilano, Bendigo Bank, Future Bees Fund at UWA, Label Magic, Guilfoyles Beekeeping & Lotteries Commission.

Ends.
