Inland drainage framework good for long term prospects

The Western Australian Farmers Federation (Inc.) (WAFarmers) welcomes the announcement from the Liberal National Government which provides a framework for inland drainage across the State.

Water Minister, Hon Bill Marmion, and Agriculture and Food Minister, Hon Terry Redman, said the framework would guide the use of drainage as an option for inland farmers to manage salinity and waterlogging.

WAFarmers President, Dale Park, said a State Salinity Strategy formed part of WAFarmers’ long term plan for Western Australia’s agricultural industries.

“WAFarmers is seeking the development of a State Salinity Strategy which prioritises NRM planning and funding processes to address the impact of salinity,” Mr Park said.

“This announcement is a step in the right direction to help reclaim productive land which has been affected by salinity.

“WAFarmers wants to ensure the long term viability and sustainability of agriculture in this State, to do that we need to have as much productive land as possible,” Mr Park concluded.
