Livestock ship visit

A small group of WAFarmers Meat Councillors, members and staff went on board Wellard’s Ocean Drover on Friday January 17 to look at procedures and on-board conditions for livestock.

Expectations were high and the consensus was that conditions were impressive. Several people who have been in the industry for many years noted how significantly processes had changed over the years. For example, feed is gravity driven on demand to the troughs in the pens instead of being delivered by wheelbarrow; ventilation shafts ensure air changes occur at around three times the rate than a 747 airliner; and animal welfare contingency plans are in place to ensure the welfare of livestock when being loaded and on board the boat.
