WA produces another rising champ

WAFarmers extends congratulations to member Blythe Calnan, who was last night named the NAB Agribusiness Rising Beef Champion.

Blythe said she was “absolutely thrilled” to be named the winner of the award at last night’s gala dinner, which capped off a three-day stint in Canberra filled with workshops, meetings and a chance to speak with Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce.

Blythe grew up in the East Pilbara, where she is now based, and has spent the past four years working in the Middle East as an animal welfare and handling consultant.

“The Rising Champions experience has been fantastic and beyond my expectations. The variety and scope of the group of state finalists was amazing,” Blythe said.

She said she hoped to use the platform to improve the communication of positive aspects of the live export trade.

Blythe is the second WA-bred Rising Champion in a row, following on from last year’s winner, former AgConnectWA President Stephanie Coombes.

As part of the prize, Blythe will travel to Texas next year for the Five Nations Beef Alliance Conference.

WAFarmers Beef Section President Jeff Murray said it was encouraging to see someone so passionate and experienced take out a national award, particularly since they were from WA.

“Blythe’s time in the Middle East and on various cattle stations gives her a unique perspective and I am sure she will use this platform to the greatest advantage of the industry,” he said.
