Sheep Council appoints new members to grow industry – DAFWA

Five new members have been appointed to the Sheep Industry Leadership Council (SILC).

The SILC, supported by the Department of Agriculture and Food, was formed in 2011 to bring together key industry leaders to shape the future of the WA sheep industry.

SILC chair Rob Egerton-Warburton said the new appointments were Michael O’Neill (Northam), Andrew Ritchie (Darkan), Jessica Horstman (Geraldton), Bindi Murray (Woodanilling) and Kelly Manton-Pearce (Yealering).

“They join Cameron Tubby, John Edwards and Richard Coole who have been re-appointed for a second term,” Mr Egerton-Warburton said.

“Members of the council bring an array of expertise and experience across the sheep industry in production, marketing, processing, and the implementation of strategic plans and project management.”

Department sheep industry development director Bruce Mullan said the department remained committed to working with industry to grow the sheep flock and capitalise on the demands from international markets for sheep meat.

“For 2013-14, lamb exports were valued at $200 million which was an increase of 78 per cent on the previous year,” Dr Mullan said.

“This demand for sheep meat is expected to continue over the next few years.”

Dr Mullan said the department and SILC had worked together to develop the WA Sheep Industry Strategic Plan 2025+, which outlined the need for all sectors along the supply chain to work together for the long term success of the State’s sheep industry.

“The plan is a statement of commitment and involvement by the key representatives of the sheep supply chain in WA,” Dr Mullan said.

Mr Rob Egerton-Warburton said the continued implementation of the strategic plan was the highest priority for SILC.

“Clear investment directions have been identified and will provide a focal point for the coordination and continuous development of the industry over the coming years,” Mr Egerton-Warburton said.

“SILC will also continue to build relationships with key industry stakeholders, provide technical input, advice and guidance on existing and new sheep projects and act as a focus group for industry issues.”
