Speakers inspire at WAFarmers Conference

Day two of the WAFarmers Annual Conference left attendees excited about the future of the Western Australian agricultural sector, after an inspiring breakfast, welcome from the Federal Government, two discussion panels with guests including Andrew Forrest and David Lock, and a bread workshop.

The day’s proceedings were opened by Sergeant Troy Simmonds at the business breakfast, who spoke about the importance of perseverance, encouragement and lateral thinking in all aspects of life, and how those characteristics helped him through his deployments overseas.

Following a brief address by WAFarmers President Tony York, Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources Senator Anne Ruston officially opened the formalities of the day, and assured attendees of the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting and developing the national agricultural sector.

“I am really confident that agriculture has a huge and bright future in this country,” Senator Ruston said.

The ever-popular panel discussions were kicked off with a trio of young agricultural representatives – Phil Clark from Focus Fisheries, 2015 Youth Ag Summit Delegate Laura Grubb, and Wes Lefroy from Precision SoilTech.

Their presentations generated thoughtful discussion about the future of farming and highlighted why the sector needs more young people in it to capitalise on opportunities.

Minderoo Group Managing Director Andrew Forrest and Mareterram Managing Director David Lock comprised the second panel, both of whom agreed that the state’s agricultural sector faces a very solid future.

The final part of the day saw Tom O’Toole from Victoria’s Beechworth Bakery present his famous bread workshop, a motivating event that left attendees invigorated, informed and inspired to think outside the box when it came to customer service, marketing and culture within a business.

WAFarmers President Tony York said the Annual Conference was bigger and better than ever before, and was a reflection of things to come within the sector.

“The state’s agricultural sector is dynamic and exciting as it responds to ever-increasing demand for quality products and services on state, national and international levels,” he said.

“By delivering the latest agricultural information and showcasing innovative methods in farming, we hope we have inspired farmers and stakeholders alike to think outside the box and recognise opportunities for agricultural diversity.”
