A Tale of Two Ministers

WAFarmers representatives have met with Shadow Federal Agriculture Minister Joel Fitzgibbon during his visit to Western Australia this week to discuss issues of importance to the State’s agriculture industry.

Mr Fitzgibbon’s visit was extremely appreciated and emphasised the fact that Western Australia was yet to receive a visit from Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce, WAFarmers President Dale Park said.

“Our discussions with Mr Fitzgibbon have been very fruitful and his visit reflects a genuine interest in the sustainability and profitability of the State’s farming sector,” Mr Park said.

Mr Park said he had extended several invitations to Mr Joyce since he was appointed Agriculture Minister to ensure he could attain a greater understanding of the State’s requirements.

“Given Western Australia has the most valuable grain industry in the nation, worth almost $2 billion, and is the largest live export state for sheep, it is a wonder Mr Joyce has not yet made the trip over,” he said.

“It is extremely disappointing, especially considering we have particular concerns to address with the Minister regarding recent decisions, such as the appointment of the Agricultural Industry Advisory Council and the discriminatory nature of the concessional loans package, among other issues.”
