WAFarmers calls on WA Labor to commit to agriculture

The Western Australian Farmers Federation (Inc) (WAFarmers) is calling on WA Labor to outline its plans for agriculture, in line with the other political parties, prior to the State Election on Saturday 9 March.

WAFarmers released its 10 Key State Election Issues in January and since then has engaged with all political parties in relation to the future of agriculture in Western Australia.

WAFarmers President, Dale Park, said earlier this week, WAFarmers had released its report card on the political parties responses to WAFarmers key issues and WA Labor had plenty of questions to answer.

“WA Labor does not have an agricultural policy and in my opinion this is a major oversight on their behalf,” Mr Park said.

“I welcome their commitment to Tier 3 rail and rural roads but there are too many unanswered questions relating to the key issues affecting people in the bush such as agricultural impact assessments, rural community services and a long term plan for agriculture.”

Mr Park said WAFarmers had previously welcomed agricultural policies from the Nationals and the Liberals and would welcome details of Labor’s plans for agriculture.

“We publicly welcomed the Nationals $300 million vision for agriculture and now is the time for Labor to show that it values agriculture and the work farmers do in this state,” he said.

“The Liberal Party and the Greens also have agricultural policies and it is a concern that a party claiming it can be an alternative government does not have an official policy on agriculture.

“WAFarmers calls on WA Labor Leader, Mark McGowan, and Agriculture Spokesman, Paul Papalia, to outline their vision for agriculture prior to the State Election so that people can make an informed decision at the ballot box,” Mr Park concluded.
