WAFarmers will launch an appeal at the Dowerin Field Days next week to ensure that rural Western Australia gets a fair outcome should the Port of Fremantle be privatised.
The State Government announced in May that it plans to sell the state asset in a bid to get back in the black by the next financial year.
WAFarmers President Dale Park said the privatisation of the port will affect everybody in Western Australia, including farmers, and there is cause for concern given the State Government’s track record with privatisation.
“We are in favour of privatising the port, provided that there clear benefits for the rural community in doing so,” Mr Park said.
“It is imperative that the Government puts processes and mechanisms in place to protect both exporters and importers to ensure they can continue to operate competitively if the port is sold,” Mr Park said.
WAFarmers past experience shows that governments have great difficulty putting the necessary mechanisms in place when privatising public assets.
