WAFarmers welcomes appointment of ACCC’S Ag Commissioner

WAFarmers congratulates Mick Keogh OAM on his appointment as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) first Agricultural Commissioner, and believes his appointment will be a positive step for the sector in terms of competition.

Mr Keogh was appointed as Agricultural Commissioner this morning, representing the delivery of a key component of the Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper.

“With his broad policy, academic and industry experience, we are confident that Mr Keogh will be a fair and understanding representative for farmers across the nation on competition, market power, supply chain and legal issues,” WAFarmers President Tony York said.

“It was critical that the government appointed an individual with in-depth knowledge of the sector and a clear understanding of these issues, particularly market competition, and we are pleased that they have appointed such a strong voice for the rural sector.

Mr York said the completion of the ACCC’s Agriculture Enforcement and Engagement Unit with the appointment of Mr Keogh would facilitate a more effective relationship between farmers and the ACCC, and would ensure the fair treatment of all individuals along the supply chain.

“We look forward to working with Mr Keogh to ensure the ACCC gains a broader understanding of competition within the agricultural industry on both a state and national level, and encourage honest and open conversation about these issues with the Commissioner,” he said.
