WAFarmers welcomes the Trans-Pacific Partnership

WAFarmers welcomes the completion of negotiations under the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) which will improve market opportunities for a range of agricultural commodities produced by farmers in Western Australia.

The agreement between twelve countries was reached overnight and is expected to drive sustainable growth, promote innovation, enhance job opportunities and reduce trade barriers.

WAFarmers President Dale Park said the conclusion of the agreement is a generally positive outcome for Australian farmers.

“The TPP will create longer term benefits for Australian farmers, particularly in countries where we don’t have already have agreements,” Mr Park said.

Australia exported roughly $15 billion of agricultural goods to TPP countries in 2014 and this is set to increase as a result of the agreement.

The TPP is a multi-country Trade Agreement between Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Japan, the United States, Vietnam, Mexico and Canada.

Ends.
