Wool section opposes smaller AWI board

WAFarmers Wool Section does not support a resolution to reduce the number of members on the board of Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) from ten to seven.

Section President Ed Rogister said he would be voting against the resolution at this month’s AWI annual general meeting in the interest of maintaining the credibility, effectiveness and appropriate corporate governance of the AWI board.

“It is in the best interests of producers from around Australia, let alone WA, to retain the current size of the board to ensure their interests are truly represented,” Mr Rogister said.

“We feel that by limiting the number of board members to seven, the board’s agenda will become much narrower to the detriment of a large number of producers.”

Mr Rogister said he was disappointed with the direction AWI had taken in the past year, particularly their decision to discontinue funding to programs such as Bred Well, Fed Well, Sheep CRC and INF2.

“The best way to ensure producers have their say on the future direction of AWI is to vote or appoint a proxy to vote on their behalf,” Mr Rogister said.

“A Western Australian, WAFarmers Upper Great Southern Zone President John Hassell, is a candidate for the election of board directors, meaning there is a possibility for WA producers to have greater representation if they exercise their vote.

“The Wool Section has supported Mr Hassell’s nomination and election to the board.”

Mr Rogister, along with WAFarmers Wool Section Senior Vice President Ken Clark and Executive Member Max Watts, will be travelling to the AGM and can be nominated as proxies before November 20 by those unable to attend.
