Beekeepers Conference to feature industry experts

The WAFarmers Beekeepers Annual Conference will be held on Friday, June 6 at the Country Comfort Inter City Perth in Belmont.

The conference features speakers presenting on a range of issues of relevance to beekeepers, including Australian Honey Bee Industry Council chairman Ian Zadow, Capilano beekeeper services manager Bill Winner and Department of Environment and Regulation strategic projects coordinator Abbie Crawford.

Attendees to the conference will have the opportunity to vote on the Australian Honey Bee Industry Council (AHBIC) proposal to raise the honey levy from the current 2.3c/kg to 4.6c/kg on July 1, 2015, raising an additional $460,000 per year to contribute to biosecurity activities across Australia.

AHBIC is also proposing the raise the threshold of honey produced which the levy applies to from 600kg to 1,500kg in an effort to make the honey levy more efficient to collect.

Office bearers for the positions of Beekeepers Section President, Senior Vice President and Vice President, all one year terms, will be elected at the conference.

The conference is sponsored by the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation, Country Comfort Inter City Perth, Wescobee, Ensyntex Australasia, John L. Guilfoyle Pty Ltd and Nuplas Plastic Bee Hives.

Registrations for the conference must be received by May 31.
