Iran deal boosts welfare, producers

Western Australia’s peak agricultural lobby group, WAFarmers, welcomes the signing of a health protocol agreement paving the way for the reopening of the live animal trade with Iran.

Meat Section President Jeff Murray said the reopening of the market would be a win for both producers and animal welfare standards.

“Any country Australia exports live animals to benefits from implementing our world class animal welfare standards through the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System and our excellent reputation for training local workers in those standards,” Mr Murray said.

“Iran is a member of the World Organisation for Animal Health, signally the nation’s commitment to upholding high standards of animal welfare.

“Prior to the trade with Iran being suspended in the 1970s, Iran imported more than one million head of sheep annually – a return to similar numbers would provide a significant boost to producers in Western Australia, where most of the sheep would come from.”

While the reopening of trade with Iran was still in early stages, Mr Murray congratulated the Department of Agriculture and Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce on working to expand and diversify the markets available for Australian producers.
