Open letter from WA Police Licensing Enforcement Division

OFFICIAL

Dear Firearm Traders and Industry Representatives

I hope this message finds you well.

I am writing to you today with an important update regarding the ongoing Firearms Reform Program.

As you are aware, the Firearms Act 2024 introduced significant changes to our firearms legislation, marking one of the most comprehensive overhauls in the State’s history. Despite extensive efforts over the past six months, many licence holders still have not completed the required steps to comply with the new legislation as their Transitional Authorities near expiry.

We want to make it clear that the time for compliance is running out. Our officers are preparing to start firearm seizures from individuals who have repeatedly ignored our attempts to assist them in meeting the new obligations, and whose Transitional Authorities start to expire next week. We are reaching out to you, our trusted partners, to help communicate this important message to your members and networks.

Please encourage all licence holders who have not yet transitioned to finalise their licence arrangements immediately. They have the option to complete the transition process, surrender their firearms at a Police Station as part of the permanent amnesty, or lodge their firearms with a dealer before their transitional authorities expire. It is crucial that they understand the urgency and the potential consequences of inaction.

Your cooperation and support in this matter are invaluable.

Should you or licence holders have any questions or require further information, please contact the Firearms Transition Team on 1300 894 474.

Thank you for your attention and assistance.

Yours sincerely

SUPT MARK GILBERT
