‘Right to Repair’ to be extended to agricultural machinery

Australia’s state and territory Treasurers met on Friday, after which Federal Treasurer Hon Dr Jim Chalmers MP announced:

The Commonwealth will also… Extend our ‘Right to Repair’ reforms to agricultural machinery

The agreement means the Federal Government can now amend Competition and Consumer legislation as part of its ongoing work on reforms to improve productivity and competition across a range of sectors.

Dr Chalmers said agreements in the area of National Competition Policy reforms also included a “ban on non-compete clauses to boost wages“, and “Heavy vehicle reforms to boost productivity and increase the uptake of electric heavy vehicles“.

While details on how and when these reforms will happen are not yet available, WAFarmers is encouraged that progress appears to have been made, particularly in the area of Right to Repair in agriculture which will allow farmers to repair their own machinery, or engage any qualified repairer without voiding machinery warranties.

As always, we will keep our members informed of progress (or not) in this important area of our advocacy.
