Win on sheep research funding

WAFarmers welcomes the announcement that funding for the Cooperative Research Centre for Sheep Industry Innovation (Sheep CRC) has been extended by the Department of Industry.

In the interests of Western Australian sheep producers, WAFarmers had been lobbying the Federal government for the funding extension for the past 12 months, Wool Section President Ed Rogister said.

“This issue has remained front and centre in our activities since highlighted at last year’s Annual General Meeting,” Mr Rogister said.

“We have also ensured Sheep CRC funding remained firmly on the agenda for wool industry peak body WoolProducers Australia during this time.”

More than $15 million from the Federal government will be matched by $45 million in cash and in-kind contributions from 35 industry and producer organisations.

“It is thrilling to see industry support an initiative which brings primary producers, scientists and research institutions together to increase productivity and profitability through new technologies adapted to meat and wool supply chains,” Mr Rogister said.

Mr Rogister said it was disappointing the wool industry’s research and development body, Australian Wool Innovation Ltd (AWI), did not support the Sheep CRC extension bid along with the rest of industry.

“It is a shame AWI will miss out on being part of an exciting movement whose aim is to make a positive difference in the sheep industry,” he said.
