Murray elected Meat President for sixth term

The Western Australian Farmers Federation (Inc) (WAFarmers) Meat Section has elected Jeff Murray Meat Section President, unopposed, at the 2013 WAFarmers Meat Section Conference at the Vines Resort and Country Club last week.

Senior Vice President, John Wallace, Esperance, and Vice President, David Slade, Mount Barker, were also elected unopposed by delegates.

Mr Murray said he was honoured to lead the Meat Section for a sixth year.

“2012 has been a challenging year for livestock producers with mixed seasonal conditions across the state and a number of pressures impacting on farmers beyond the farm gate,” Mr Murray said.

WAFarmers recognises the need to continue to fight for an improved bottom line in agriculture as the cost of inputs increase and tighter regulations grip the industry.

“We dealt with live export related matters, as WA sheep producers were once again caught up in a diplomatic row. WAFarmers continued to represent our members in this debate at a State and Federal level, with active participation in a number of instrumental taskforces and remaining engaged with the WA Livestock Exporters Association.

Animal welfare continues to be a number one priority for WAFarmers and due to the nature of attacks that livestock producers have come under over the past 12 months, we continue to educate members about the need for proven and auditable animal welfare systems to guarantee animal welfare on farm.

WAFarmers is also actively engaged with the drafting of national standards and guidelines for the welfare of sheep and cattle.

“The next year will continue to challenge meat producers and WAFarmers is committed to the expansion of live exports and ensuring we can assist farmers by attempting to influence the cost of doing business and ensure that governments understand the impact of regulation on the farming sector,” Mr Murray concluded.
