Rogister gets second term as Wool Section President

The Western Australian Farmers Federation (Inc) (WAFarmers) Wool Section has re-elected President, Ed Rogister, for a second term at the 2013 WAFarmers Wool Section Conference, sponsored by Australian Wool Testing Authority (AWTA) last week.

Lower King farmer, Mr Rogister, was elected unopposed as was Senior Vice President, Ken Clark, Beverley, and new Vice President, Ian Robertson, Kojonup.

Mr Rogister said the highlight of 2012 was WAFarmers rejoining peak wool industry body, WoolProducers Australia to provide members with a stronger voice on national issues.

“Wool Section has been heavily involved with reviewing the Ovine Johne’s Disease (OJD) National Management plan which industry is considering for implementation on 1 July,” Mr Rogister said.

“WAFarmers has also been reviewing the Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Sheep which are being fast tracked by the Federal Government.  WAFarmers is ensuring that the standards and supporting guidelines are achievable and practical.”

Mr Rogister said one of the disappointments of the last year was the decision by the Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) Board to change from a 50:50 split between marketing and R&D for wool tax to 60:40.

“We also are outraged at non disclosure of the WoolPoll 2012, AWI must be still ashamed of the results. We, as shareholders, have the right to demand to see the full results broken down state by state,” he said.

“WAFarmers supported a reduction of wool tax and while the two per cent has remained in place, WAFarmers maintains serious concern about the corporate governance of the company as to the process by which it consults state farm organisations and shareholders at large. It is shameful how the AWI Board and Chief Executive Officer dismiss company shareholders with continued contempt,” Mr Rogister concluded.
