Nalder’s resignation highlights need for ag leadership stability

WAFarmers has expressed frustration on behalf of the state’s agricultural sector, after Dean Nalder’s resignation from Cabinet and his Agricultural and Transport portfolios on the weekend.

WAFarmers President Tony York said the industry deserved better, and that stability in leadership was greatly needed.

“We are extremely disappointed and frustrated that we have lost another Minister for Agriculture, the second within less than a year,” Mr York said.

“There are many ongoing issues that require the attention of a dedicated Minister such as the state’s dairy industry difficulties, GMO’s, and the issues surrounding DAFWA’s structure and biosecurity funding.

“This continual instability in leadership means these issues will not likely be resolved within a timely manner or to the standard required to ensure the ongoing success of the state’s agricultural industry.”

Mr York said WAFarmers respected Mr Nalder’s decision to resign.

“During his tenure as Minister for Agriculture, WAFarmers had established a good relationship with Mr Nalder,” Mr York said.

“It was pleasing to hear him acknowledge that DAFWA had suffered significant cuts over recent years and that he intended to stabilise funding, giving DAFWA a strong financial base to build upon.

“We had been very hopeful about the future of the agriculture industry under Mr Nalder’s leadership and while we had expected his tenure to have been much longer, we respect his decision to resign and thank him for his work in ensuring a viable, profitable and sustainable future for the agricultural industry.

“We hope that the government can appoint an appropriate individual quickly to take over the agriculture portfolio so that our work, alongside the Minister, can continue.”
