Positive recommendation expected from White Paper

The Federal Government’s soon-to-be released White Paper will recommend that farmers be encouraged to take up multi-peril crop insurance using financial incentives, according to an article published in The West Australian.

WAFarmers senior vice president Tony York said the news is promising as the federally supported drought funding has often been inappropriate and difficult to apply in WA, rarely benefitting the State’s growers.

“It is a logical incentive to encourage farmers to take up the policies as a viable alternative to the Federal Government’s ad-hoc drought funding.”

WAFarmers has advocated the introduction of multi-peril crop insurance as a tool to help alleviate farming’s variable income, which is affected by drought, frosts and price variations.

Mr York said it is encouraging that more companies are now offering multi-peril crop insurance policies and it is pleasing that the Federal Government considers them a legitimate investment in the agricultural industry.

“Many other industry sectors have had similar income protections through insurance and there is increasing encouragement for us to do so,” he said.

WAFarmers has made numerous submissions to the issues paper and green paper which form the basis of the White Paper on agriculture.

Ends.
