Time to enact policies now that ministry announced

WAFarmers welcomes today’s announcement of Australia’s new government ministry and looks forward to seeing the commitments on agriculture made during the election campaign turned into policy.

WAFarmers President Dale Park congratulated Barnaby Joyce on his appointment as Agriculture Minister, as well as Richard Colbeck on his appointment as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister.

“We look forward to building a constructive relationship with the new minister and parliamentary secretary and working together to ensure the future profitability and competitiveness of the industry,” Mr Park said.

“In addition, as issues pertaining to agriculture relate to a number of other portfolios, we look forward to working closely with several other newly-appointed ministers, including Trade and Investment Minister Andrew Robb, Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Warren Truss and Environment Minister Greg Hunt.”

Now that the ministry has been finalised, it is time to get on with the job of creating policy enabling the future viability and success of the sector – including establishing a foreign investment register, expanding market access for small exporters and investing in research and development, Mr Park said.

“We expect the Coalition government to follow through with the promises they took to the election, which were largely welcomed by the agriculture industry,” Mr Park said.
