Disappointment at Honey Decision

WAFarmers has written to the Minister for Agriculture and Food Ken Baston urging him not to approve an application to allow the importation of untreated honey from interstate and overseas into WA for packaging and export.

There is fear within the industry that importing untreated honey may compromise the biosecurity of WA’s beekeeping industry. The Minister, in his correspondence with WAFarmers, stated that “the assessment by the Department of Agriculture and Food WA of the risk posed by the import and repackaging of untreated honey under the controlled conditions outlined in the protocol is acceptably low. Consequently, under this scenario, failure to approve the application would be in breach of WA’s and Australia’s trade agreements and leaves WA open to challenge from our trading partners.”

WAFarmers is disappointed with this decision.
